My Students

My favorite word is FUN! I want my students to learn through meaningful experiences and apply what they learn to the real world.

My 5th grade class includes some gifted learners and high achievers.

I want them to be challenged, but I also want the material to be accessible to my other students. They often work in groups to make sense of mathematical concepts. They come from diverse backgrounds and many live in low-income households. My students are motivated and are excited about learning.

My Project

In a professional development class this summer, I connected with a teacher who has her class build a LEGO city using mathematical concepts. I love this idea of using LEGOs to show an understanding of volume as well as perimeter and area. Students will build floor plans and bid for their land in small groups and communicate with other groups to make sure that their city is well-planned. We will display their work for the school and parents to view.

My students will be part of a meaningful project that, hopefully, they will remember for years to come.

Many of my students already use LEGOs at home, so why not in school? They will see how math can be used in real life.
