This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low income area where 99% of the school receives free or reduced-price lunch. There are approximately 800 students from Pre-K to 4th grade with 75% of them as English as their second language. The students come from backgrounds where money is not readily available and they depend on the school for survival. Most of the kids only get a meal when they come to school.
I have students who are new to the country and Spanish is their primary and only language that they know.
With the Texas STAAR exam, the students need daily practice in reading in order to be successful on the test. We encourage reading heavily at our school through reading contest, morning reading time, and library book check out.
This year the district has changed the bilingual framework and our Dual Language classes have increased, which means we are in dire need of more bilingual or Spanish books for our library. The Spanish books that we currently have become torn and old due to the multiple use of them daily. We would like to have new and current books for our students to read and enjoy.
My Project
These nonfiction Spanish titles will help to build our library's nonfiction section for our bilingual and dual language students. The books we have now are heavily used and are beginning to fall apart. Having fresh new titles for students to read will promote reading in all languages and genres. Also, our teachers will have more resources to use in the classroom with the students.
Nonfiction books are not the most popular books for students to check out.
However, if the students see that there are new books available, they may be more inclined to check them out. The books that we weed out for the new ones will be donated to staff and students to use at home.
