My Students

I work for Shelby County schools in Memphis Tennessee. I am a Special Education teacher working at the middle school level with 8th grade students. In Shelby County, we have 108,000 students in our district. Out of those students, 78,000 struggle with poverty in their homes. Because of this, our students need so much support at school. This support is provided in many forms--from educational support, sports, clubs, basic needs, basic supplies, and even social emotional support. The administration and school staff do our best to provide all these basic needs for our students the best we can. This lends to staff having to come out of pocket to provide our students with basic classroom needs.

I want my students to feel like they are comfortable and safe when they are in my classroom.

This means providing them with the basic materials they need and seating options they need as well. As their Special Education Teacher, I want my students to feel that their education needs are being meet and that they have a classroom that fits their learning styles.

My Project

I am a 8th Grade Special Education Teacher. My students need the ability to have their learning be flexible. To help them achieve these I need more seating options in my classroom and curriculum to help me feel the gaps in their education. Yoga balls are a wonderful source of seating that will allow my students the ability to fidget and they need but still stay focused on their classroom work. To help my students become better readers and writers I need the curriculum to help me fill the gaps. I want the best for my students and this means providing them with the materials they need.
