Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at an elementary school at HISD as a bilingual kindergarten teacher. Our campus is a low income, at risk school that serves over eight hundred students. Almost one hundred percent of the students at my school are economically disadvantage and most students read below grade level. Not to my surprise, my classroom is the largest classroom in the whole school with an enrollment of twenty-seven students.

I can say that students in my classroom are clever, super energetic and simply happy.

I love seeing them walk into my classroom with a smile regardless of what is going on at home after the devastating disaster of hurricane Harvey. My students love to move around the classroom and explore new ways of learning. Just like many other children, my students enjoy experiencing and learning from technology.

My classroom consists of a wide variety of diverse backgrounds. Although many had never set a foot inside a classroom, I was astounded to find out that my students were anxious and excited to start school. They could express nothing more than the joy of meeting new friends, a new teacher and of course, learning new things.

My Project

My classroom is equipped with three classroom computers in which my students have difficulty navigating through. Because seventy-five percent of my students are first year students, they are having a hard time adapting to the classroom procedures. Having resources like iPads will help me encourage them to follow classroom procedures by allowing them to use a behavior management tool that we use in class to help monitor their own behavior. My biggest reason on why I would like to get iPads for my students is because I would like for my students to experience different ways of learning. I strongly believe that technology is a great way to incorporate fun and successful learning to young children. I will be incorporating the iPads during our math and literacy centers. The district has provided several digital resources for math and reading and I would like for my students to adequatly and successfully use them with the ease of technology. Providing a resource where students will be excited to use, will enable them to gain many skills such as life, emotional and social.

My students will be ecstatic to discover that learning can be fun with a simple magic touch.

These iPads will also provide differentiation and accommodation for those students that need it. This is my third year as a teacher and learning how to maximize instruction during small group, is challenging when students do not know how to log onto the computers. iPads will surely help maximize my small group instruction while providing a fun, learning experience for my young children.
