Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are natural-born scientists and explorers. They just don't know it yet! They are inquisitive, they want to learn, they're analytical, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning and truth, share their own stories, and become agents of change to make the world a more verdant place. And it is my job to facilitate and give them access to the knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers and purpose they seek. We, like many public schools, struggle with purchasing new supplies, especially technology, and we must then rely on your generosity to fill in the financial and ultimately learning gaps that allow us to get the technology, experiences, and opportunities our students need to grow into passionate academics and global citizens.

My Project

My students get bombarded with professionally-curated media on a minute-by-minute basis, through their social media feeds and their phones. These clips, whether they be video or audio, influence and drive a lot of my students' opinions, thoughts, and behaviors. Sometimes these produced pieces have a positive effect and sometimes a detrimental one. Their families are also at the receiving end of this media, sometimes for better, many times over for worse--particularly in the changing and volatile political and social flux were currently experiencing.

Last year we started a podcasting club at our school, a small club where interested, driven and passionate individuals can design, create, produce and disseminate high-quality, student-focused content around areas of interest; modeled after Story Corps, this next year our club program will especially focus on environmental and immigration issue that teens and their families can relate to--anything from personal histories and stories, to discussing current news and issues.

Many students in my IB Environmental Science classes, along with my Academic Decathlon classes, are insanely passionate about their futures, yet exhibit fears and angst about the changing world they live in- and they want to make they own path. They truly are motivated to create a better version of the things to come, to involve their families, to engaging parents in the conversation and the issue that matter to them- both locally (education issue, gun and school violence, bullying, gender issues, immigration, school funding, etc) and globally (pollution, migration, human rights and climate change). We need additional equipment- a simple USB mic and another digital recorder (we have one from a previous project that is broken). I hope that making the necessary technology available will spark a platform for their free expression of ideas and solutions.
