Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students enjoy being able to learn in different spaces around the room, and sitting on the carpet is one of their favorites, even as fourth-graders! Enter the easel. With our class easel, we are able to sit more closely together and work in a more casual setting, allowing more opportunities for students to share with the class, a small group, or one partner.

We use our easel every day for math talks, to solve word problems, to organize our thoughts before writing, and to practice complex language, and it's time for a refill on our chart paper!

While it might seem like a small thing -- chart paper -- it actually makes a huge impact on my students' learning. I have never see as much growth in math understanding as when we conduct our math talk and problem-solving activities together on the carpet. We come up with great story ideas and chart our plans before writing. We even use this space to develop our summarizing skills from texts we read together. And what ties all of these lessons and skills together? Our easel and chart paper, of course!
