My Students

I am a 4th and 5th Grade English Language Arts and Math teacher. Our school does looping so we have the privilege to stay with the same students for two years in a row. I teach roughly 50-60 students each school year. My students come to school sharing their many different cultural backgrounds and experiences.

My students come from a variety of economic levels.

Our school is an intermediate public school (only 4th and 5th grade). Therefore, we have a wide variety of students from the entire city. Our population is middle class working families with roughly 60% of students qualify for free and reduced lunches. We also have a large amount of students with ADHD and Special Education. These students seem to learn best by moving around the classroom during math activities and finding a a cozy, comfortable place to read. We need more seating in the classroom to help meet all of the students needs for them to be successful everyday.

My Project

I am asking for four balance ball chairs and four wobble chairs to help implement flexible seating in my classroom. Studies show that physical activity is linked to higher engagement, higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Creating flexible seating in my classroom will allow students to release all that bundled up energy by being able to move freely while learning without disrupting their peers.

Each day in a conventional school setting, students are spending 6+ hours sitting in hard plastic chairs expected to stay engaged and learn.
