My Project

I began noticing an unsettling trend of stagnant reading scores around third grade and could not understand why. This did not sit well with me, thus starting my Science of Reading (SoR) journey; brain-based research by cognitive scientists over two decades. SoR is a prevention-oriented approach, not a curriculum, focusing on speech to print NOT print to speech (how many teachers were taught).

LETRS (Language Essential for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) teaches teachers the WHY and HOW to teach reading and writing.

LETRS takes SoR and Scarborough's Rope and 'unwinds' it, analyzing each individual strand (phonological awareness, decoding, sight recognition, background knowledge, vocabulary, language structure, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge).

This year I completed the LETRS training Volume 1 which lays the foundation of reading for SoR. My goal is to complete Volume 2 next year to learn how to apply it and the knowledge and skills to improve literacy and language development.

I am extremely passionate about Science of Reading/LETRS and believe this training will help me become a more successful literacy teacher. Every student has the right to read at or above grade level and it is my responsibility to provide my students with the skills and strategies necessary to be competent and confident readers and writers.
