This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the heart of Houston's Fifth Ward is where my students and their families reside. A community full of rich culture and pride that often goes unappreciated and overlooked. A community in which poverty affects the majority of the families in which I serve; yet my students come into my classroom smiling and ready to learn on a daily basis. They are already working extremely hard to break the cycle of poverty that they are currently apart of. Each of my scholars understand the importance of their education and how it can unlock the doors to their aspirations and dreams.

My students are driven, hardworking and persevering kids who are developing oral language skills, reading comprehension strategies, and mastering their social emotional development.

They are inspiring because they always work with the end in mind and are always seeking ways to master their goals. Given the pre-set trajectory of their lives; they are knocking down barriers and working towards a strong academic career.

My Project

My students are 21st century style learners and my goal is to ensure my classroom is reflected in this way. Traditionally students learn seated in desks or on a carpet. While those methods are still sufficient and necessary at times; my young learners would truly benefit from learning in styles that are more reflective of the various types of learners they are. What is flexible seating you ask:

A flexible seating classroom is one in which traditional seating chart are replaced with seating arrangements that allow the students to seat where they choose.

One of its principal objectives is to reduce the number/duration of sedentary periods of time, which research has identified as a danger to health.My expectation is that students drive their learning and academic outcomes and therefore I must allow them to do so; therefore flexible seating allows students to control their learning in a way which is most comfortable and authentic to them.

This transition to flexible seating in my classroom is set to drive commitment, concentration, and strong student growth academically and socially. This project will allow students to choose various modalities of seating options. Some of the options will include exercise balls, stacked stools, wobbly stools, video game recliners, and lap desks. Each type of seating will be at their discretion and utilized during our literacy and math centers times allowing them the most comfort and choice while learning. Flexible seating will also be utilized during small group learning and projects where students will be able to sit the best way comfortable while learning from and with their peers.
