Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students live in a tech driven society with minimal access to 21st century tools. I aim to alter this reality and become a model for using technology in fun and engaging ways. I would like to order a laptop to create online and tech intensive projects performed in 21st century libraries.

We are a campus library that serves three unique schools in New York.

Our school library serves Title I schools with over 80% of the student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch. My students are inquisitive and eager 6th-12th graders that come from a community that has severe socioeconomic challenges. While we live in a digital age, my students do not have access to or experience with technology.

My Project

The Apple MacBook Pro will be used in the library to enhance and promote a love of reading while also being used to model and instruct proper information technology skills to students. I am starting to teach smaller classes where students "share" a screen and learn in small groups. This laptop would be fantastic for small group sessions and could also be used to project and teach an entire class. I am excited about the idea of having my students create reading PSAs (Public Service Announcements), podcasts, and blogs using the technology on a Mac and presenting this work to their fellow classmates. These activities bring students who have "tuned out" reading and learning back into a creative learning community.

A new laptop will help our library continue to become a hub of learning for our school community, especially for my students.

It will provide a great amount of freedom as students won't be tied to a fixed working area, instead they will have the opportunity to move and work where they feel most comfortable. They'll also be introduced to a new computer platform, many of our students have never worked on a Mac. This hopefully will be the first of many laptops for learning in the library.
