Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are 26 creative and hardworking first grade students in my general education classroom. We are the only first grade class in a high needs, low income school on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Despite so many hardships outside of the classroom, my students are eager to learn and do their best.

Many of my students come from families that struggle to provide their children with supplies for school.

I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence by immersing them in a supportive, engaging and thought-provoking environment.

My Project

Play allows students to socialize, share and learn. Allowing children to choose areas in which they want to play allows them to grow interests in different areas, fostering independence. The math and literacy manipulatives I've requested, such as magnetic letters and ten-frames and addition and subtraction board games, will allow my students to not only socialize, but they will also learn how to share and work together, while creating an opportunity to discuss ideas and develop academic skills.

These materials will help my students build planning skills, practice problem solving and help with their thinking.

Not only do these activities help to keep my students engaged, but it also makes learning new concepts easier.
