"Do you take pride in your appearance? Do you not take the time in the morning to choose a nice outfit, comb your hair, and get yourself looking good for school? Why should the presentation of your homework be any different. The work you hand in is a personal mirror that is a reflection of you." This is the analogy I provide for my students the first week of every school year to help them begin to understand the importance of their work as being a reflection of themselves. I am an avid proponent of the writing process. No heartbreaking work of staggering genius comes about without some serious revisions and edits.

I want my students to take pride in their work. Most of them however, submit the first words they have scribbled down on a piece of paper and ripped out of their notebooks. They never seem to glance over it, not even once before they hand it in. It pains me because I can see that my students have so much to offer and share in their writing, but the message is lost in a jumble of grammar and spelling mistakes that makes their work unreadable. I believe that using computers to help aid in the writing process is essential. It is a tool that is critical for high school, college, and future work situations. The problem is that my students don't always have access to computers and printers of their own to follow through with typing and editing their writing pieces.

As a way to get students to take ownership and pride in their work I propose to give each one of them a personal flash drive where they can keep all of the files of their work, music, and pictures. In this way my students will have a "transportable computer". These personal flash drives will provide them with the opportunity to sit at any computer in any school, library, or home and revisit and work on their writing. They can also save music and pictures that help to make them feel comfortable and inspired.

By supporting this endeavor you will encourage students to invest more time and effort into their work, which will in turn help them develop a deeper sense of pride in their writing. In a time and place where students feel powerless, where they feel as though their ideas are not being heard, your support empowers them with a real opportunity to effectively convey their thoughts to influence and affect other readers.
