My Students

My students are special because no matter what is happening around them, they are goal oriented. They want to READ, read and learn to read. They come from many hardships and adapting to this new way of learning will be a huge challenge for all. In the past they came to class with a happy smile, excited for the day ahead. We want the same energy and motivation from home. Our students should not have less an education because the parents can not provide all the extra tools needed to learn.

Our students do not have the funds to buy even the basic they need to learn best at home.

The children are often falling behind (academically) because they do not have the same opportunities as children in different neighborhoods. When schools closed in March, we found the children did not have basic books or materials for home. The kids used whatever paper they could find ( not good for new writers) and the parents did not have printers to print out practice sheets.

My Project

During the initial Covid shutdown in March, I tried everything to keep my kindergarten students actively learning. It quickly became apparent that the children were lacking a lot of basic materials needed at home. Reading and writing are the hardest areas for the students to the learn online and independently. While parents are there and may be able to assist, the students are not able to grasp the lesson if they don’t have the material in front of them.

I am asking for Sight Word Journals as well as Daily Language Practice Journals.

These journals will allow all students to have the same materials in front of them while we work on daily lessons/activities. Having these will allow each student to take part in daily activities while learning virtually. This will take some of the pressure off the parents because they will not have to find copies/worksheets or help because the work will be organized and all in one place and we can all work on it together. Students learn foundational skills in Kindergarten and TK. Not being in the classroom will affect each student differently, however by making sure they have the best material at their tiny little fingertips I know it can help during this difficult time.
