I am a Student Engagement Coach with Check and Connect. The Check and Connect program is an academic intervention-based program designed to engage students and families who are facing challenges in their school attendance, academics and behavior. By building relationships with families, this program will help the whole family.
My school is located in a lower socioeconomic area and the families I serve face many basic challenges, but always strive for forward progress without giving up.
When providing connections and building relationships, my students become aware of their need to be successful.
Setting small weekly goals, maintaining and following up with those weekly goals, help my students to succeed. My parents become aware of the importance of being responsible for their children, getting them to school on time and simply showing up for them. IT all makes a world of difference.
Reading is a receptive skill that is necessary for life's success. One of my responsibilities as a Student Engagement Coach is engaging with students and parents. During the first semester, I found that most of my 3rd and 4th graders can not read and/or have limited ability to read.
Since my time is limited with the students, I would like to revamp this second semester by utilizing "Hooked on Phonics" as a means to assist all my students in learning to read and improve their reading.
You will not be productive in society if you can not read and comprehend. It is important for not just my students, but their parents to understand that education goes hand in hand with academics, attendance and especially their behavior. Keeping students engaged in school works. We all have to do our part.
