My Students

My students are excited to come to school and learn! For many of them, this is their first time in a school setting. While they are eager to learn and be at school, sometimes they have difficulty focusing in the classroom because they aren't able to move as much as they would like. Many of them were at home before coming to school and aren't used to having to sit and listen to a lesson. Young students need the opportunity to focus and energize their bodies throughout the day. We like to "get our wiggles out" throughout the day so we can focus on our learning. Since this is the first time many of them have been in school, this can be quite challenging for them.

I feel it is my responsibility to create an environment where all of my students can learn.

Research shows that young students learn through movement. My students would like for me to provide opportunities throughout the day for them to get those wiggles out! I would like to have the resources to provide my students with opportunities for movement throughout the day, so that all my students can be successful!

My Project

In Kindergarten, we start right away with creating good reading habits. We teach our students to love books and to love reading. We provide plenty of opportunities for reading during the day, and we provide a wide selection of books for them to choose from. I think it is so important to foster a love of reading in young children, and these book boxes will help me accomplish this goal.

My students love to have the opportunity to pick out their "own" books to read.

They just need somewhere to put them! By providing these book boxes for my students, you will be giving them their own place to store those books they just can't wait to read. Each child will have their own book box. They will read these books over and over again, practicing those new words they just learned or even just using the picture support to tell a story. Even though many of them come in unable to read, they still love the thrill of reading a book!

By helping us get these book boxes, you are helping to foster a love of reading in my students. These book boxes will help to provide ownership of the texts they choose to read. Nobody likes to be told what to read, and, by giving my students their choice of what to read, I am motivating them to find the books they love. They learn which genres, authors, or characters they like. They explore rhyming books and informational books. They re-read the same book over and over again because they love it. Having their own book boxes to store those books helps them learn how to choose the books they love, provides the opportunity to read them again and again, and provides ownership of their reading.
