Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a Special Education teacher at an Elementary School in Los Angeles. I support students with Reading and Mathematics through push in and pull -out services to target key academic skills. Due to learning loss from the COVID-19 pandemic, more students have been qualifying for pull out services; however, my school does not have a curriculum for the Special Education Department. My students are most successful when they are excited to learn, especially through the use of games. Students enjoy playing games to practice their reading skills, for games create a less stressful environment, and they highlight how learning to read can be fun. Playing games also fosters collaboration, as students support and cheer on their classmates. The games I selected, such as Sight Word Swat, Bananagrams, Snap It Up Reading Game, and Sight Word Bingo, target the reading and phonics skills many of my students are working on, and they will provide a fun way to practice decoding and fluency.

My students also are working to develop their social emotional abilities, and they enjoy having extrinsic rewards to help motivate and destress them.

Despite the challenges they face, my students are able to be successful and motivated to learn with the support of reward charts, token charts, and prizes. My school does not provide teachers with funding for student rewards, but my students are excited to participate in their sessions when they know they are working toward a goal/prize. Students have shared that they enjoy fidgets, such as pop-its, modular erasers, and squishy toys, because playing with those tools helps them relax and destress if they are feeling overwhelmed. These prizes are earned when students demonstrate perseverance and a growth mindset, and they support the overall classroom environment, ensuring students feel safe, appreciated, and excited to learn.
