My students need manipulatives like pegs and magnets to help them learn, improve, and achieve their goals. These items will be used to work with my students who are lower functioning/non-verbal to be more engaged during tasks.

My Students

My students attend school in the South Bronx every day for a chance to improve their current skills and to continue to succeed! These are all children who come from low-income families and have special needs, specifically autism. Many of my students are non-verbal, facing challenges daily of communicating with peers and adults at school, as well as with their family and friends at home and in their community. These students receive therapy (speech, PT, and/or OT) multiple times a week, either individually, or in a group. Each child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which requires all tasks and activities to be adjusted and changed based on the skills of each student. My students are always appreciative of new materials and items they receive!

My Project

My students struggle with communicating, interacting with others, and staying focused. It is difficult to play, learn, and share if you are unfamiliar with objects. The book collection, Touch & Learn game, and "What's Inside" game are just a few of the items that will help the students learn about different objects (name, color, texture) and understand that something could look different but it is still the same. The sorting games, Color and Shape Bingo, pegs/pegboard will help students become familiar with shapes and colors and begin to identify (by pointing) and label, if the student is verbal. The puzzles, Sorting Elephant, ABCs and 123 Rocket will teach the students about cause and effect, identifying, and learn socialization skills (turn-taking, waiting).

By donating to our project you will help our students to LEARN TO PLAY and PLAY TO LEARN.

Gaining access to these resources will open the door to so many opportunities. The students will be able to improve their expressive and language skills, as well as learn pragmatic skills (turn-taking, waiting, following rules/directions). Our students will be able to be creative and most importantly enjoy learning!
