My Students

My amazing students are in the Functional Skills program at my high school and range in age from 9th-12th grade and Post-High which serves students ages 18-22 with moderate to severe disabilities. My students have varying degrees of disabilities, but they all are learning how to make healthy food choices, basic nutrition and cooking skills. We cook lunch four out of five days per week. I would love to be able to help them learn and understand that healthy eating is a priority.

All of the students in my program would benefit from having new cooking supplies, kitchen tools, timers, and visual cookbooks designed specifically for children with moderate to severe disabilities.

My Project

The materials in this project will help me to teach my students how to make healthy and nutritious choices during our Cooking Classes in our classroom kitchen. Safety is always a priority, so the safety gloves and kids' knives will definitely be put to good use. Because the majority of my students have severe disabilities, it is challenging to find cookbooks that they can follow. Visual Recipes - A Cookbook for Non-Readers will be put to daily use as my students learn how to prepare nutritious meals with pictures.

Learning about healthy and nutritious food choices will benefit all of my students and is a true independent life skill!

I have also requested several food related instructional tools to teach sorting and chopping, and multiple ability-appropriate games including Food Bingo to make learning about healthy eating fun!
