My Students

My 8th grade students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our school is located in a very rural community within driving distance of Washington, D.C. I teach students who come from farming families, others whose parents work for the government, and everything in between.

Most importantly, my students are a rich spectrum of interests.

They love art, romance, history, science, nature, adventure, technology, and almost anything else you can imagine. At 13-14 years old, they are young enough to still possess that natural joy and enthusiasm about learning something new, but old enough to show interest in and begin understanding more mature and powerful themes in literature.

My Project

Although theater should be one of the most exciting elements of our curriculum, our students have been limited to the dry and dated plays contained in our textbook. The students see themselves as suffering through a play rather than enjoying a play.

We hope to build a genuine interest in theater by introducing our students to Shakespeare and other talented playwrights.

In our first phase of this project, we are hoping to allow students to choose between Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew. To accommodate those with different interests, we are also hoping to include small groups that will read other plays such as A Raisin in the Sun, Monster by Walter Dean Myers, and The Laramie Project.

It is our hope that the compelling nature of the plots in these plays, the excitement of performing, and the ability to create costumes and settings will encourage students to see reading a play as a privilege instead of an obligation.
