My Students

My students are a unique bunch. I have sixteen kindergardeners in Frayser, an impoverished, disenfranchised community within Memphis, Tennessee.

They are a sweet, smart group with such a great desire to learn.

That in itself is great, as the school I work in is considered to be in the bottom five percent in the state of Tennessee. It is the Achievement School District's goal to move these schools directly from the bottom five percent to the top twenty-five percent. This challenge requires hard work, smart work, and great love.

My Project

I am requesting materials to provide my scholars with hands-on experience with literacy. I requested water beads and storage containers to create a sensory letter hunt center in which students find and identify letters. I requested the boards and bingo daubers for word work. I requested the reader sets because I have no kindergarten appropriate books for my classroom library.

By giving my scholars year-round, interactive experiences with letters and books, I hope to prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond.

I am looking forward to making reading FUN using these resources in centers every week. I hope to foster a love for literacy in all of my students.
