Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from different walks of life. Some were born outside the U.S. without any knowledge of the English language, while others were born here but their English skills are still developing. They all share many commonalities. They are English Language Learners, they are excited to learn and they come to school with hope, enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn.

I teach in an urban school where 97% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.

In addition, they live in an area that is heavily populated and where there is a large volume of traffic. Although it is a struggle for them, they put forth all their energy in learning and building both their literacy and language skills.

My Project

My students need these rekenreks beads to use during math time. The rekenrek is a counting rack with beads that helps support the natural development of number sense in children.

My students struggle with counting and number sense.

I want my students to succeed so I researched and came to learn that rekenreks help students visualize and learn number in an easy, fun and interesting way.

This tool will help them practice their counting and number representational skills while having fun. Isn't kindergarten the place that they should learn through having fun? Help me bring back the fun and teach students to learn to love counting!
