My Students

Our kindergarten students are bright, enthusiastic English Language Learners (ELLs) who are eager to learn and grow, both academically and socially. Within the 35 kindergartners receiving ESL services, I see a multitude of children from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. I share my day with students whose native languages include Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Telugu, and Chinese, to name a few. Some of our 5-6 year olds were born and raised here in the US, while some have come here as immigrants and refugees. But with all of their differences, they share a common goal, to become students who can communicate thoughts, ideas and feelings in English.

English Learners rely heavily on visuals to build vocabulary, read alouds to enhance comprehension and a variety of modalities to increase student engagement.

Technology is a fantastic way to meet the needs of these students. Most of these students do not have access to technology at home and their technology time at school is infrequent and inconsistent. Technology integration into the ESL classroom would be an ideal way to combat the dilemma.

My Project

With eReaders, our limited English speaking kindergartners can access vocabulary building tools, audio resources such as read-alouds, and apps to improve their phonics skills. These resources help students to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing in English by increasing vocabulary, utilizing background knowledge and enhancing comprehension. Teachers can track their students' progress to inform and tailor instruction to fit the specific needs of each student.

Many of these apps afford educators the opportunity to make the school-home connection, encouraging the extension of English language development to the whole family.

By connecting with home, parents and caretakers can see what the child is learning in school which leads to authentic conversations in English. Technology is a fun and engaging way for students to interact with content, as well as each other!
