Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see my students facing several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I am the 3rd-5th grade, SLD Teacher at an inner-city school in Mid-City Los Angeles. Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds and often school items aren’t available to them because of financial hardships. Parents have to make the tough decision to pay a bill or put food on the table and forgoing school essentials that will help their children excel. My students are often many grade levels behind, nonverbal, but also full of many talents. Despite these many challenges, my students always come ready to learn.

My goal is for all my students to recognize and embrace their unlimited potential and realize their goals and dreams.

From the minute, they walk into the classroom, I focus on helping my students develop a growth mindset. We learn to embrace our differences and help spread Autism awareness. By doing these things, I hope to empower my students to continue a path of academic excellence.

My Project

Due to having multiple grade levels, my classroom is set up in rotations in order to target their needs. My students often require repetition of skills and interactive hands on tools to retain academic knowledge. They work in centers daily between math and language arts. It is extremely critical to have a variety of meaningful, engaging, hands-on centers for my children to learn, play, and keep them excited each day!

New centers will increase student engagement, language skills, and social skills therefore increasing student learning.

Providing these manipulatives will create more opportunities for students. My goal is to use multiple modalities in order to increase student’s math, reading and writing abilities. They will be able to use the power pen to immediately check their math fluency and reading comprehension. Having different sets of math concepts will allow all my students to master their grade level standard through practice.
