Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a struggling school. We are trying to do our best with a lack of resources to support our students the way that they need. We try to do the most with the little we do have. Our students are wonderful kids who really try to make the most of their education and take advantage of being in school every day. They work hard to not let their struggles stop them from learning.

This semester, my juniors have been engaged in a Social Justice Curriculum so that they are knowledgeable and prepared for their upcoming future.

This Curriculum has struck a personal cord with them because so much of what they are seeing in the news and with politics have personally affected them and will continue to personally effect them. And they have a fire in them to become socially engaged and politically active members of society. They refuse to be passive.

My Project

I would like to have each student have a copy in class so they can engage with the feel and experience of reading Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates instead of having passages copied on paper. This year, our students became very politically engaged and active. They organized and walked out for March for our Lives. They want to continue to learn from other people's experiences, the way that our government engages with its people and how people engage with their government to make positive changes.

This is a powerful book, and I want them to use this book as a stepping stone to observe and analyze their own world.
