Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you recall how you began reading as a child? What drew your interest and kept your attention? I can. I remember learning to read by hearing my grandmother read stories, and then listening to audio tapes with the book. This help me to build pheonomic awareness and interest in reading.

My students are children typically diagnosed with Autism, or Pervasive Developmental Disorder.

Some of my students my have other diagnoses as well. My students range in age from 5-7 and are considered a Kindergarten setting. My child come from an impoverished urban area in New York, where more than 90% of our students receive free meals. My students suffer from developmental delays in cognitive thinking, behavioral management, emotional control, speech and language communication, sensory system processing, and socialization strategies with others. My students need an opportunity to learn, they need more available to them in our schools. These children only learn from what it is that I am able to provide for them as a teacher. My students learn from repetition and there attention is drawn in through different media sources. I am hoping to engage them in reading by providing them with an audio section to the library, as my students seem to be very interested in audio books.

My Project

For our classroom, we are hoping to complete our library with some audio books for students to listen to and follow along with. My students have a difficult time paying attention during group read alouds, as their disability often distracts them. My students are intrigued by different media sources, such as computers, and cd players. I am hoping to engage them in reading by providing books in the library that they can follow along to independently with a CD. Currently we only have 2 audio books in our classroom library and we are hoping to expand it. With your support, we will be able to add to our classroom library, and provide students with a multimodal approach to reading by addressing their needs. You will also help to create some independence for children who lack the ability to complete many, or most activities independently. Thank you for considering our classroom project, the only opportunity my students have to learn is within my classroom, and you can make a difference.

This project is so important because you will help to provide reading opportunities for children who have difficulty being intrigued, and engaged in learning.

You will help give a lifelong gift to a child in need, the gift of reading. These children are in need of help, not only because they have a disability but they also come from an impoverished, crime ridden neighborhood from an inner urban area in New York. Please be the person to make a difference today.
