Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach vibrant kindergarteners that are growing their love for school and learning. My students come from diverse backgrounds primarily from African and Latino heritage. Many of which may be experiencing a school setting for the first time or may be English language learners. I cannot speak about my students without mentioning the amazing families, whom everyday beat the hardships of poverty to give their children an opportunity to grow and flourish. Teaching in the South Bronx comes with particular challenges but enthusiasm is never one!

“Play is the highest form of research” - Albert Einstein.

In Kindergarten my students will be growing by leaps. They will go from not knowing their letters to writing simple sentences; from enjoying read alouds to reading with a partner; from not recognizing numbers to critically thinking about number patterns. While these are some of the benchmarks for Kindergarten lets not forget that true learning will unfold from self driven curiosity during play and meaningful interactions. My students will go from saying, “This is mine!” to “let’s collaborate;” from stacking blocks to building fantastic structures that extend upwards and sideways. This year my students will be learning and playing because children learn through play.

My Project

My project is looking to enhance classroom centers used during our daily “Project Time.” This time of the day is where the magic happens, yet little resources are allocated towards materials needed. My goal is to provide my students with materials that will facilitate play. These materials will grow with my students as they go from the vague exploration of how blocks or sand work to more sophisticated representational play.

Play is how children make sense of the world around them and the organic interactions that occur during play nurtures a sense of community.

Each center during “Project Time” consists of 4 to 5 students and it is designed to spark curiosity that often derives from concepts taught during structured learning. For instance, in Social Studies children learn about the classroom community. Then extend their knowledge to the school community. Lastly reaching their neighborhood community. Their growing knowledge is reflected as they build restaurants or their classroom in the block center, or paint their experiences in the community in the art center, or perhaps role play a scenario in the dramatic play center. Project time in kindergarten is our sanctuary where we get to know each other and we let our creativity flow.
