My Project

As a speech therapist I am receiving more and more students who require speech therapy as young as PRE-k 3, Pre-k 4 and so forth. These students are little and best practice shows us that these students truly learn best through play. Play is not only a part of childhood, it is essential and a great way for our children to learn. Utilizing appropriate play materials in speech therapy allows students to be engaged, motivated and best of all, make progress with meeting their speech and language goals. Some materials included in the list are tactile supports such as kinetic sand and pull tubes. These can be effective in moments of transitions and use of kinetic sand can be used to model prepositions (i.e., in, on, under etc.) DUPLO blocks and magnetic tiles have been proven to be very motivating and can be used in speech therapy to build various structures during which time language is facilitated with descriptive language such as; modeling colors, big, small, etc. Also, these structures are perfect to hide pictured items or food items inside and allow the therapist to model new language for students in a fun way. Other items on my wish list include tangible items such as food toys/ animals which are great to expand students vocabulary skills by labeling these items and engaging students in categorizing of said tangible items.
