Learning Through Play the Pre-K Way!

Help me give my students the materials (dolls, soft blocks, puzzles) they need to be able to learn in the classroom during many of our interdisciplinary units of study. With these materials my students will be able to explore and promote language.

My Students

Hello everyone,

My students are a joyful, energetic, and curious bunch of bees that are eager to learn and explore.

They demonstrate curiosity as learners through their engagement and participation in classroom centers. In our classroom we work on many different things like social emotional development, phonics, mathematics, and reading. Over this school year our classroom became a community where my students feel comfortable and safe to express themselves, their interests, and ideas.

The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic families and don't have many resources available to them outside of the school setting. For me as an educator it is essential and my goal to provide my students with various manipulatives, books, and materials that will allow them to continue to express themselves freely within the classroom setting.

In our school we have two pre-k classrooms and both myself and the other teacher collaborate closely together in creating the best learning space we can for our students.

My Project

In my classroom the curriculum I use is the DOE Interdisciplinary Units of Study. The Interdisciplinary Units of Study are ten units that are all four weeks long. To name a few of the units of study we learn and explore are "Five Senses", "Transportation", "Planting", and "Babies". With these units of study students learn through participating in large group discussions based on the focus questions and engaging in hands on activities through the different centers offered in the classroom.

Each unit of study promotes students' thinking, curiosity, and exploration of various topics.

The materials will make a difference in my students' learning because it will allow them to engage in learning through play and use materials that have connection with the units of studies. In my classroom we have different centers such as writing center, dramatic play center, block center, science center, and math center. Each center holds materials in connection with the learning objective and focus question for that week. With each unit the materials in the centers are changed to give students new content and items to engage and participate in. Often times as a class we work on projects to make things for the centers, but having new items will allow my students to grow, learn, and create understanding for these topics. Having the material to correlate with the units of study is a big component for the classroom because in Pre-K we learn through play.
