My Students

Kindergarten is where students' love of learning truly begins. It is in our classroom that we set the academic, social, and emotional building blocks for the rest of a child's learning career. We set high expectations for our kindergartners, and challenge them every day to do their best and succeed.

My scholars, as we call our students, are a high energy group of 4, 5, and 6-year-old kindergartners.

Most of my students are classified as Special Education students and almost all live in poverty. They have hard home lives and school is really a refuge for them; a place they can feel safe and loved. A place that is consistent and meaningful and where they will be pushed to do their best, no matter their circumstances. We truly believe that ALL of our scholars have the capabilities to not only attend but also to graduate from college. While we do set high academic expectations for our scholars we also know that they are still young and need time to play and interact with their peers. This is where recess plays such a key part in helping our scholars to have fun while learning to interact with others.

My Project

Recess is so important to young scholars but yet they are not given enough time or space to truly play and cultivate valuable social skills. My scholars will use games such as Uno, Chutes and Ladders, and Race to the Treasure to build cooperation, sharing, and peer-to-peer interaction skills. They will use things like Lego's, Play-Doh, and coloring pads as an outlet for their creativity.

These scholars come from a place where they work and live hard but are not always given the opportunity to "play hard".

This project will help these scholars learn through play and build many of the basic skills need to be successful with others. "Recess should no longer be treated as an afterthought but as a core part of any strategy for promoting learning and improving health."- Jane Lowe (Team Director for the Vulnerable Populations Portfolio at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
