This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Empower us to grow our own vegetables and taste the deliciousness of fresh produce. We have only a few garden tools, but have recently revitalized our raised beds thanks to Disney and GreenCorps Chicago. Now we have to be able to maintain it so we learn from it and enjoy it for many years to come.

Our students live in a high poverty, high crime urban area.

Their experiences outdoors are extremely limited. The land around school is contaminated and depressed so even while students are outdoors they are unable to experience the beauty of a garden; to raise vegetables in the soil is unhealthy. Our revised raised beds are in an enclosed courtyard so provide a safe haven for outdoor learning and garden experiences. Students are very motivated; we even have an afterschool Environmental Club which I host so that 4th-8th graders can help with gardening, energy conservation and recycling stewardship. They are proud of their work and anxious to do more; so they need the garden tools.

My Project

The tools will allow weeding of our perennial bed and allow us to efficiently tend an annual vegetable garden. The tool set includes hand trowels and forks for planting new vegetable plants and weeding. The pruners will allow us maintain the perennials to a healthy, well shaped condition. The pruners and lopper will also help us maintain the couple of shrub like plantings as well. Having enough tools will allow a classroom at a time to tend to the garden. This will allow for more learning time and less time "gardening". Currently a few students at a time have to remove themselves from the lesson and garden while their classmates work at an outdoor lab session; this is not good learning for those few students and disruptive for me as a teacher trying to manage gardening and teaching at the same time. These tools will last for many years; so we will have a flourishing garden many times.

This project helps us maintain the investment of refurbishing our garden thanks to Disney and GreenCorps Chicago.

It will allow more students to learn techniques needed to keep a healthy vegetable garden; this learning can carry itself to educating families in our neighborhood.
