Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students consist of inner city children that come from low income families, some are even homeless. As a teacher in an Urban Abbot district, I work with four and five year-old students ranging in levels of development. I have several students with special needs (IEP's) that are currently mainstreamed into my general education classroom. One student in particular currently has a personal aid to help support him in his daily school related tasks.

My student population consists of inner city children mainly coming from low income families.

I have several students with special needs, one in particular with a personal aid. We are a dual-language school where students learn English and Spanish. We are proud to be a national school of character!

My Project

Preschoolers thrive when exploring through their senses. Sand and Water are a fundamental part of the preschool experience. Having a water table in the classroom allows students to explore a variety of concepts such as sink and float, volume and much more! Additionally, water play is very soothing for little ones, particularly those with sensory issues. Sand play is also incredibly soothing for children as well as engaging. It allows them to build sand castles, draw letters, numbers and shapes with their fingers to enhance their beginning writing skills, filling and emptying etc. Sand and water tables are essential learning tools in the preschool classroom.

Another crucial aspect of an enriching preschool learning experience is having well defined working areas.

Rugs are a wonderful way to separate the individual work areas/centers for students to properly engage. We need a learning rug in our classroom where students can sit during circle time. A rug, such as the one we chose, will help students have a place to sit comfortably while learning. Circle time is an important time of day because it is an opportunity for students and teachers to discuss the weather, the calendar, check in with their feelings, count, recognize letters and more.

Students love working with small manipulatives to help learn a variety of concepts such as counting for a purpose, one-to-one correspondence, sorting, adding, subtracting, graphing and more. Keeping these small manipulatives organized is important because it facilitates the process for the student to easily find the materials as well as properly put it back in its place. We feel it's important to rotate manipulatives to keep children's' interest so we need a few storage containers to help with this process.
