Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You can do it. Yes, you can! This is the motto that my students use daily. All students have the capacity to learn. I feel that all they need is a little faith, guidance and the knowledge that I believe in them. Knowing this my students realize that there is no reason not to believe in themselves.

My class consists of ESOL and ESE students.

My ESOL students have yet to master English and unfortunately their parents do not speak English as well. My ESE students are learning disabled or as I like to say they "learn differently". Our school is predominately Hispanic and our current enrollment is above 800 students. The majority of our parents are Spanish speaking and although they are extremely helpful they lack the mastery in English to assist their children at home. Those parents that wish to retain one to one tutoring for their children are limited due to financial restraints. Therefore, the impact that I have in the classroom is even more important to the learning gains of my students.

My Project

In lieu of pre-made posters/ charts the students & I make our own as we learn new concepts through mini lessons and small groups. We are a class that makes Anchor Charts so that we may write down important facts or steps in a lesson in a vivid/ colorful way & display the poster/ chart paper up in our classroom to refer back to as needed. This way the students take ownership of their learning. The Royal Inspiration Station allows me the place to do just this. It will provide us a place where I can teach small group without disturbing the other students who are working at their desks, but allow me the space & materials to conduct my small group lessons or mini lessons. Mini Lessons are an important tool for me to teach because young children generally have a short attention span. Through mini lessons I can get to the meat of our instruction and put what we learned into action. The RIS would definitely allow me to do this successfully. I know this will positively impact my students.

My project is important because all my students learn differently.

This project will really help to maximize what they learn in a way that is not only engaging but lasting. I have not been able to implement my mini lessons/ small group using Anchor Charts as I have wanted to because I do not have the materials or space to do so. This will give us the space and provide the place to carry out my interactive lessons. I just want to give my students the opportunity to be active in their learning.
