Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember ever looking forward to reading something in your classroom? Usually students are given textbooks or library books to read but this year, I would love to expose my new students to a new form of literature - the informative magazine.

My class is made up of 18 special education (bilingual) students all of whom have learning disabilities and speech and language impairments.

They attend a public elementary school in New York and all of them struggle with reading and writing. Many of them are not regularly exposed to the world outside of the communities they live in.

My Project

This is why I would love to get them magazines to supplement their learning. I feel that learning about the world around them and what is happening in real time will spark their interest in reading. These students are used to "assigned reading" and it bores them. Having something new will interest them and keep them engaged in classroom conversations (hopefully helping them with some of their speech issues).

I am planning on using the magazines in everything from independent reading time to science/social studies lessons and even art activities whenever possible.

The students will be plugged into this year's current events (and since this is an election year, they will learn civics as well) and reinforce their reading skills at the same time.
