Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten students come from various different boroughs across the New York City area, most coming from low-income areas. Many of my Kindergarten students are also new enrollments for their first official year of elementary school.

Being fairly new to a classroom setting, it is important for all of my students to feel excited about coming to school and beginning their educational journey.

Their Kindergarten classroom will set the tone on their attitude towards school and learning and will put them on track to success in academics and proper development of social-emotional skills.

My Project

My Kindergarten students need a variety of different literacy centers in order to help promote early reading and writing skills. I am looking to prepare my classroom literacy center for the year with multiple different activities that focus on different areas of learning such as, letter/sound ID, vowel recognition, blend/digraph recognition, sight word recognition, and sentence building that can be used daily throughout our literacy center block. I am also looking to use these supplies to facilitate and promote differentiated guided reading groups within my classroom to target individual needs.

If children are not given the fundamental knowledge, skills, and sufficient time to practice and explore in the area early literacy, there is a possibility of falling behind in later years.

If literacy is made a priority in the classroom in a way that is accessible and engaging to all students, it will help all students to grow to be successful as readers and writers as they are introduced to different content throughout their academic journeys.

Reading is everywhere and will follow all students throughout their lives. These fun, engaging, and developmentally-appropriate center activities will get my young students excited about school and help them gain a better understanding of these sometimes difficult concepts and increase their confidence in themselves starting at a young age.
