Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher and teach a 7th/8th grade Emotional Disorder classroom. My students are energetic, ambitious, and passionate. We are a Title I school in a suburban community and the majority of students in my classroom come from low-income households.

My students face different challenges in life compared to other students their age but they are brave, resilient, and strong.

Within the classroom, learning abilities are exceedingly wide-ranging; there are multiple students above and below grade level. In my opinion, rapport with students is one of the most critical aspects of a classroom. Students need to feel safe, comfortable, and cared about. Each student is so uniquely different, so the way you teach should be, too. My main priority as their teacher is to support them in becoming the independent, self-confident, and successful young people I know they can be.

My Project

The materials I have included in this project will allow for a student-led classroom. When students have the opportunity to be in charge of their own learning, it allows them to strengthen critical life skills such as teamwork and communication and supports growing a deeper understanding of the content.

In my classroom, all students are at different places in their learning.

Using kits like the Acids, Bases, and pH Kit allows for all students to participate in an activity together and at their own pace. It can be modified to challenge students independently. It will create an active learning environment, which increases student engagement. Instead of learning through slides on a presentation, they are able to learn through experimenting.

I teach a self-contained classroom, which means I teach all subjects. To support my students, I teach a class called “Transitional Support.” The objective for this class is to provide support, guidance, and practice in self-regulating, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, setting goals, making friends, healthy coping strategies, and building self-confidence. These are critical skills all people need throughout life. The Robot Crawler Classroom Pack is a wonderful way for students to naturally practice problem solving, communication, and self-confidence. It also supports their academic learning by students exploring linkages, friction, and mechanical energy. They’ll also experiment with variables, test the results, and redesign the robot to make it as fast or strong as possible.
