Learning Through Doing Science is an experiential based science learning program I am developing to make a significant impact on my students studies. I would like for my students to be able to have more hands on science experiences in order to experience life in a more meaningful manner. I want to teach students that science is real life, not just a subject in school. This proposal is for a class of 29 fourth graders in a Title I school located in a very remote location. Because many of the parents do not have much education and because there are almost no professional jobs available in science fields, many of my students have little interest in science. Parents are prone towards viewing science as something to do at school, and not in life. I would like to purchase items that would teach students to pursue inquiry about real life science through hands on experiences that they complete. Since we are in an area with the lowest tax base in our state, money is always limited. Unfortunately, our main resource in the classroom tends to be limited to science textbooks (ten years old) and materials we can round up to use with them. They do not offer students a chance to do their own activities and discover by doing. Teachers often cannot afford to buy the kinds of materials that would make science really meaningful and fun for students. When we do manage to get science kits, the consumables go quickly and then we can not afford to resupply them and they become useless shells of a kit. Our homemade kits and supplies are often seriously inadequate but are all we can manage. Science needs to be learned through hands on experiences that motivate students to discover more about the world. I would like to get some science kits designed for real world application with an emphasis on inquiry methods of learning. By location alone, our students are deprived of many chances to learn from others. There is no science museum in our area where they can go and do science activities. Please, help these students in an area of serious need discover on their own that they can learn when they touch and do science!
