Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Pre-K centers opened their doors to in-person learning 4 days a week in January. With this comes the demand for more supplies which we will use in school. Our budget cuts have eliminated our teacher’s choice budget which allows us to buy some materials that will enhance the learning of our students.

Cooking is another way to make learning fun.

Students can learn to measure, make predictions and experiment, use their five senses to describe observations and so much more. Although our students are only four, they have a innate curiosity to learn and experiment especially when it comes to food. Cooking can be incorporated into math and literacy. Previously, we made oceans using food coloring, heavy cream and sprinkles. We also made pretzel goldfish in our sea, made edible planets and cone trees. Sometimes, we ask for donations from our families for basic supplies, however our families are facing hardships during this pandemic season.

My Project

Our students come from diverse backgrounds and speak a native language. But, there is one thing we all have in common- the need to eat. Cooking allows us to come together as a class and make learning fun!

We look forward to using these materials to help us make future cooking projects such as ice cream, smoothies, juices, butter and so much more.

I aim to incorporate a cooking activity at least once a week and integrate it into our unit of study. Our future units of study on Plants, Babies and Transformation gives us opportunities to incorporate cooking to make their learning experiences meaningful. The sticker and vinyl paper allows students to draw their experiences and take it home as a sticker to show their parents or place it in their journal. Our Pre-k students love stickers, and what better if they make their own stickers!
