My Students

"A book is a gift that you can open again and again". Do you remember a time when your imagination came strictly from books? Reading has always been a way to escape into the world of imagination. With these books, I want to motivate my students to learn to love reading.

I work in a low poverty school located in Michigan.

My students are hearing impaired and they rely a lot on visuals to learn. They are third through fifth grade students who are behind in literacy because of their hearing impairment. Missing those first few years of hearing, has had a great impact on language for them. They like reading but the books that I have in my classroom now, are either broken or have no pictures. The students are not on reading grade level and I want to boost them up so they can rise to the top like the students I know they can be.

My Project

My students will use these books to make connections with the world around them. I chose books that focus on different subjects so that when I am teaching them, they can have visual connections to go with the lesson. There are books that connect with every subject: math, social studies, science and of course, ELA. I want to provide more language and exposure for my students so that they can feel more confident in their learning. I know that with these books, it will help me reach them in ways that I couldn't. I plan on using the baskets to have more organization with the books so they will know what category each book belongs in. I want to expand and grow our classroom library so that we can be excited about reading.

These books and baskets will make a huge difference for my students because they will motivate them to learn and grow as I am teaching them different lessons.

I want to be able to have lots of visuals for them as I teach and what better way to do it than a book? These books will expand their vocabulary and bring exposure to the world that they may have missed at an earlier age.
