Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a lively, lovely and diverse set of 9th grade students. We are exploring complex issues of race, gender and class through literature and I want then to learn the scholarly way to interact with a text. They are so eager to be the best they can be.

Being 9th graders, they are just learning what it means to be accountable for themselves and their learning.

For many of them, they have come to realize that high school requires fortitude, dedication and resilience. They are are funny and curious and kind. However, many of them lack an understanding of the skills they will need to be successful as students. Many of them are the first in their family to attend high school in the United States and others hope to be the first in their family to graduate high school. Regardless of their background, they share a common goal of being successful. They are united their understanding that their education is an essential element of their future success.

My Project

Students will use the Post-It Flags to "annotate" various elements of understanding as we read novels and explore issues of identity, race, gender and class. Students use books provided by the school and are unable to write in the books. Using Post-It Flags will enable students to "annotate" their reading as they look for evidence of theme, literary devices, vocabulary and meaning as they progress through the novels. They will then be able to use the Post-it Flags to to gather up textual evidence as they write literary analysis essays.

These materials will help my students because I will be able to teach them how to read with purpose.

Students will need these skills in order to complete "close readings" and gather evidence for future analysis. Our school is on its third year and resources are few. Asking for $400 of Post-It Flags would not be a high priority, but they will provide an very essential tool as I teach my students how to to become critical readers. This small item will help me teach my students how to work smarter.
