My Students

Paper airplanes... they're not just for disrupting class anymore. This time, they're the focus of class!

Our students are a diverse group of children from all over the world.

They attend our proud but struggling public school, which is one of the best in the Bronx even though we're struggling with the latest round of budget cuts. This project will assist every child in the 5th grade, including gifted and special education classes.

My Project

At the last fifth-grade teacher meeting, the assistant principal wondered aloud why our children are having difficulty with measurement. My immediate response was that they need hands-on experience, something that they would never forget, so I immediately proposed a Paper Airplane derby. Each class will construct paper airplanes, then measure the dimensions of each plane and the distance that each one flies. Every teacher in the grade is on board with this idea! We're ordering six copies of the "Kids' Paper Airplane Book," one for each class and a spare. We're also ordering one tape measure per class so that students can take turns measuring flight distances. Not only will students learn and have an unforgettable experience, they will also participate in a project that brings every class in the 5th grade together!

Having created several DonorsChoose projects before, I can tell you that each one has been about more than learning.

It has also been about creating shared experiences among children in different classes who might otherwise have never had the chance to get to know each other. This project, like those I've created in the past, will again allow students to learn social skills as well as academic ones. Won't you please help us to let learning take flight with this project?
