This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach fantastic students at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We love to learn through hands-on activities and authentic experiences in the classroom, especially during small group instruction. Our students are in need of essential resources and materials that will benefit them during reading and writing lessons.
Our school is truly a barrier free school, serving all students who come through our doors.
Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work.
My Project
My students have been using gallon sized plastic baggies to store books. However, we want to protect and preserve our classroom library in a more environmentally friendly way. We often go through boxes of Ziploc baggies a month, and we realize that it is not sustainable way of going about lending library! We have come to understand that we need to take care of our library and avoid preventable damage to our beloved books. We can do that with "See and Store" pouches that are sturdy and impermeable!
The "See and Store" pouches can be sealed with a Velcro-like snap and are made of durable vinyl.
Books can be transported to and from school safely without the added worry of rain, snow and jostling bus rides home. Each pouch will be labeled with the student's name and my name so that if they are lost, can be easily returned to our classroom.
We also need new classroom rugs to make our meeting area clean, inviting and warm! Our current rug is worn and needs to be replaced. It has rips, and many permanent stains! A new rug would make a tremendous difference, giving our classroom a colorful place to learn, share out and get comfortable during reading. The smaller rugs will provide an area for small group instruction. Students will be able to meet with peers and conference with teachers in a quiet area of the classroom.
