My Students

We are problem solvers! Our second grade community is a place where we take pride in knowing that we all come from various backgrounds and all learn in different ways. Science, technology engineering, and math skills dominate the new frontiers of both higher education and employment. Our students deserve to use their brilliance around problem solving creatively, as well as traditional math tasks in order to prepare to be the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Problem solving is so much more than word problems and our students are adept at creative solutions and practice.

We're engineers, poets, scientists, artists, architects and much more.

My Project

Our students are encouraged to choose independent work spaces within our second grade classroom that best support their learning. They experiment and we ask them to be accountable for their choices by being reflective about what works best for them as learners. Flexible seating options in our classroom will give this collaboratively taught community the opportunity to find the work spaces that work best for them. Our students will be able to choose seats that are low to the ground and comfy, stools that engage their cores and help soothe distracted thoughts and use carpet spots to build their own configuration of partner seats or small groups. This choice and autonomy gives young students a space for deeper engagement and the opportunity to discover how they best learn as independent thinkers. As we offer a wide variety of work and seating options we serve our unique population the best we can.

Understanding yourself as a learner is empowering, and the power of this self determination for young students should not be underestimated.

Adults often think that children are unaware of the world around them, unable to decide what serves and does not serve them well. This is simply not true. Given choices to make a classroom space their own, our second graders will thrive and deepen the sense of community that we so passionately strive to create.

Students will be given a variety of seating options to meet their very different needs in a collaboratively taught classroom. By allowing all students to make choices about their work space, we also work to de-stigmatize different seating for students who may have felt uncomfortable using classroom accommodations. When every student gets an opportunity to know themselves as a learner, all of us are stronger.
