Learning Space in the Halls & on the Walls

Help me give my students an opportunity to excel by creating learning environments throughout the building using Lakeshore Flex-Space seating [Premium Wobble-Chair] to make every space a comfortable learning station.

My Project

Throughout my teaching tenure it has been my goal to provide students with various opportunities for learning and retention. There have been years when I didn't even near my goal; however, there have been some years when I have had to become very inventive creating games that show them that I am not trying to tie them to a book and that I am equally concerned about them as a person as I am about their brain development.

Over the past three years of my tenure I have met the aforementioned goal by adopting the philosophy of "From Seatwork to Feetwork." Students now engage in a circuit of hallway stations that provide the opportunity for them to rotate through four different learning activities inclusive of vocabulary enrichment, reading and understanding nonfiction texts, learning content specific vocabulary, and reading and understanding paired passages [connections between them].

The flexible seating will afford my students comfort while working in the hall. The additional snacks are incentives for after school learning opportunites that will sasiate their stomachs until they reach home. Students learn to work cooperatively with their peers in small group settings, to respect the norms of the building by keeping noise levels to a minimum while other classes are in session, and they enjoy not being tied to classroom desk for ninety minutes every other day. The hallway circuit learning has a dual benefit in that it creates smaller numbers in the classroom allowing me as the instructor to have more one on one time with students and to teach concepts to smaller pockets; thereby, increasing the opportunity for learning and retention.

The opportunity afforded if my request is met will have lasting affects as it will help to mold students who understand structure, have mastered content, and who work cooperatively.
