Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a tough neighborhood in NYC. They have various and multiple special needs and have a very difficult time learning basic skills. They struggle every day trying to communicate their wants and needs.

Some of our students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds, make eye contact, or hold a paintbrush.

Our students are amazing! Just like all children, they love to play and explore their environment and we encourage it!

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and my therapy is about building skills. The work I do in the classroom is based on building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, accessing general education content in different ways, and expressing wants and needs. We celebrate little wins together each day. This is why I am in need of manipulative to engage my little learning in a fun and engaging way disguised as playing.

My Project

Teachers that love to teach, teach children to love to learn. Using games and visual cards during speech sessions not only allows my students to generalize what has been taught but also prompts independence and confidence. But most importantly it makes learning fun!

Most children are visual and tactile learners therefore, we must learn to tap into their strengths!

Visual learners need things in front of them to help solidify what is being taught. My students are most engaged when my lesson is full of manipulative and visuals for them to touch and see making the lesson as concrete as possible.
