Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine twenty-five 2nd grade students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their voices and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their studies!

I teach 2nd grade at a progressive, dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.

Washington Heights is primarily a Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that twenty-five to forty percent of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!

My Project

As we prepare to reopen our schools nothing is more important than doing so safely. I am so excited to welcome my students to my classroom once again and want to ensure that I have the tools to so. As an early childhood teacher I have tables instead of desks in my classroom. The vinyl partitions will ensure that two students can sit at each table at safe distance.

The visual barrier will help my young students understand physical distancing in an age appropriate way in which they can still see and talk to their peers.

This project will also provide each student their own supply caddy to organize and store their new no-share materials. I know that young children cannot stay at their tables all day though. Students will receive their own wobble cushion and lap desk to help them self-regulate when they need a body break. Looking forward to this exciting and challenging year!
