My Students

My PreK classroom is a busy place filled with learning! In PreK, students are exposed to the alphabet, and I would like for all of my students to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet by the end of the year.

My students are curious and eager little people.

They are excited to learn everything they can. They enjoy learning about letters because they want to learn to read what they call "big kid" books. In my class, my students have a variety of learning styles. Some are visual learners, while some are auditory. There are tactile learners, and there are kinesthetic learners. My school is a Title 1 school located in Brooklyn, NY. The majority of the children in my class come from low income families.

My Project

These materials will be used throughout the day in whole group and small group activities. Some will also be available for independent practice and exploration. These materials will be especially beneficial to students who are tactile learners, although all students will benefit from using these materials. The tactile letters can be used not only for tracing with a finger, but also for matching capital to lowercase letters. The trace and learn activity will allow me to incorporate a different texture to be experienced through letter writing. My students love puzzles. The alphabet maze will allow students to practice matching letters, while developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. I am confident that the BINGO game will quickly become a class favorite!

This project will help to move my students further along on the path of literacy.

Hands on learning and activities are motivating at all grade levels, but they are especially motivating to young children like the students I work with. These materials would help provide more opportunities for hands on learning.
