Our classroom is “The Land of I Can,” but right now there is one thing that we cannot: all sit together on the carpet.
My 23 Kindergartners are energetic and eager to learn, but they face some pretty big challenges.
They live in a poverty-level neighborhood outside of one of the largest cities in the country, where unemployment is high and resources are scarce. Most of my students are at risk of becoming victims of the achievement gap. Our school is a small charter which aims to instill in students a sense of responsibility while creating academically prepared citizens. Our goal is that every one of our eighth graders will go to a selective-enrollment high school, and I have no doubt that my Kindergartners will be on track by the end of the year.
I believe that every Kindergarten classroom should have a rug large enough to fit the whole class for group instruction. For example, each morning when I begin my class, we will sit on the carpet for morning meeting, which gives me the opportunity to build community as my students practice improving their social skills. The alphabet is a strange and mysterious thing to my students. Some can recognize the letters in their name, while others cannot read any of the letters in the alphabet. An ABC carpet in our room will help to make the letters come alive. Each day, every student will receive a letter that is "theirs" for the day. Any time that we come to the carpet, they will sit on their letter. During read-aloud students will search for their letter in the stories that I read. Additionally, we will have a Letters Station in the classroom where each week different activities would give children the chance to practice letter and word recognition on the carpet.
My goal is that every one of my Kindergartners leaves my class with a passion for learning, and that starts with the basics - classroom environment and the ABC's!
Help me make a difference in their lives and give them a solid foundation to build off of in the coming years.
