My Students

The students that will benefit from this project range age 12 to 15. They are kids from a small urban community. Each student has different academic needs, represents a different background, and has different goals for the future. This project will focus on problem solving skills and team building skills.

The students in this class have a variety of disabilities including specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, health impairments, cognitive delays, and autism spectrum disorder.

We have to work on self-control and communication on a daily basis.

All of my students come to school with a history of adverse childhood experiences. Many students are so immersed in their technology devices and social media that they lack interpersonal social skills and problem solving skills. According to research, students feel more comfortable in an online situation where emotions are neutral and second chances are standard. Our students with deficits in social skills and problem solving skills will benefit from this project as it will encourage them to work together to complete tasks.

My Project

Giving this generation opportunities to learn technology skills may improve their chances for future employment. The materials requested in this project will allow the students to gain coding skills. We need Spheros and storage cases for them. The students will use district provided iPads and current software to manipulate the Spheros in challenging tasks.

While engaging in coding activities, students will improve their problem solving skills by getting the robots to navigate paths and perform tasks with help from their teammates.

Each team will code step-by-step moves in order to get the Sphero to follow a designed maze. Over time, the tasks can become more challenging, adapting to students' increased skill levels.

Learning this new skill can improve peer relationships and team building skills by having members work together on projects or having teams compete. Ultimately, I would like to see this incorporated into a community engagement event where families code together to strengthen their communication skills and allow time for bonding.
