Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a large, urban community of Newark, New Jersey. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences and culture to our school. We are a Title I school in a low-income community. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day, which are now remotely served in schools by our district.

My students are kind, clever and very enthusiastic about their future.

The majority of my students are well below seventh grade benchmark, with many lacking basic math skills. They would benefit from a variety of classroom resources to help increase their success in our newly established distance remote learning platform. As of March, my students have been learning from home. School will be closed due to the COVID-19 virus for the rest of the school year. While the school system shut down abruptly, I was on medical leave. I was unable to bring home supplies that are crucial for the success of my students. To better serve them, your help is vital.

My Project

Being on medical leave I did not have access to my classroom to bring items that can help foster the proper math education our children deserve. These supplies will not only facilitate an equitable education for my middle school students, but will be used when we return to school as well. While our classrooms include 38+ students, it is not always easy for my inclusion partner teacher to have access to our classroom whiteboard. This will help facilitate instruction, centers and so much more for our bilingual/special education inclusive classrooms.
