My Students

Do you remember what it was like to try and enjoy books while sitting up straight at tables and in uncomfortable chairs? I know when I read a good book, I like to get in a quiet, comfortable spot. I would like to provide my students with this same thing so that they can learn to enjoy reading!

My students are second graders in a medium poverty school.

They are beginning to use the reading skills learned in kindergarten and first grade to choose meaningful books to read and enjoy. I want to foster a love of reading in them and feel that these materials will help to do this.

My Project

The listening center and floor pillows will help my students to enjoy reading during our daily reading workshop time. Listening to books on CD will help them to build fluency and expression in their own oral reading. Also, my students LOVE to have stories read to them, and this listening center will allow them to enjoy books in a multitude of genres. The floor pillows and backrests will allow my students to choose quiet spots in the classroom to read comfortably with a great book!

This project is so important to our class because it will help to establish a lifelong love of reading in these kids.

Being able to read is a skill necessary for all aspects of their lives-- both now and in their future.
